It's here! We're thrilled to share this album with you all…it has really been a journey. We hit the studio at MONA in Hobart in 2024, spending a few days tracking a bunch of new songs that Danny wrote.
The album was designed to be a follow-up to our 2019 release with Danny, “Between the Lines”… but once we started working more on the songs back in Brisbane, they took a new direction. Echoes of ‘The Meters’ groove-heavy funk, the soulful warmth of Leon Bridges and Ray LaMontagne, the atmospheric storytelling of Thomas Dybdahl, the dynamic energy of Tingsek & the grooves of Khruangbin all weave their way through the album. This fusion of influences creates a sound that is rich, textured, groovy…… it is different to anything we've produced before.
You may have heard the opening single EBB AND FLOW, with Danny's lyrics prompting you to just go with flow of life's challenges.
The title track IRIDESCENCE dives into ambient improvisations, but we bring you back with GET OUT OF THE CITY, a lush track with soaring string & vocal layers.
STARE INTO THE SUN strips back, with the Fender Rhodes featuring alongside lilting acoustic guitar.
IT'LL BE OK! is a favourite of ours, Danny's vocal performance is high energy, and we just love the lyrics - ‘how we spend our days is how we spend our lives’.
SUNSHINE STATE OF MIND… perhaps this is our ode to living in Brisbane. It's got a bossa nova sense to it, and Danny's pedal steel is just perfect.
BLACK MAGIC has a darker edge, telling the story of some strange experiences! The shuffle of HYPOCRITE is captivating, with the song commenting on power states around the world.
SHIPPING NEWS is another instrumental work, but it takes a surprising turn midway, with the band experimenting with sounds and textures.
Album closer “IT'S YOUR TURN” is a great feel-good track. You can hear the cowbell and Sam's bass drives the whole thing along… don't forget ‘life’s a game and it's your turn!'
Now this album could not have happened without the incredible contributions of so many people… Chris Townend @ Frying Pan - for recording the music so beautifully, Trichotomy drummer John Parker and his fantastic mix skills, Paul Blakey and his mastering genius, Paul Underwood's stunning art design, the team at Suitcase Records in Brisbane, pressing the LPs with care, Jeremy & the team at Earshift Music - true champions of creative Australian music, Matt & the team at Jazzfuel - for sharing the album with media & friends in the northern hemisphere, Jo Corbett for her work on Australian press and Luke Moller for his sweet string arranging and performances.
A huge thanks goes out to the Australian Cultural Fund Boost Program and our Cultural Fund Supporters - their financial assistance with this project has enabled it to be realised to the highest quality!
