Trichotomy & Percussion Ensemble

Over 2020 and 2021 we've spent some time developing a suite of new music for jazz trio & percussion. The percussion parts feature Vibraphone, Marimba, various hand percussion instruments and drums.

This suite of work has been composed by the musicians of Trichotomy and selected QLD composers.

All the music has been composed with high school/tertiary musicians in mind, playable by jazz and classical musicians who are interested in new, interesting and challenging music that blends these musical worlds.

All of the tracks are available in multiple formats - in-studio video recordings, audio tracks, sheet music (scores and parts), backing tracks, composer notes, and interviews.

You'll find links to purchase all the music below. Available through www.preparedsounds.com

This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding, and advisory body.

Composer Thomas Green says:
I am inspired by fiction, and this often makes its way into my music. Piranesi is an amazing novel by Susanna Clarke. I won’t give out any spoilers, but you should definitely read it. I wrote this piece at the very time I was reading the novel, hence my music has taken on the title as an homage to Clarke’s work. This music is a study in creating an entire piece from just some simple ideas.

Composer John Parker says:
In photography, the term Depth of Field relates to the “the distance between the nearest and the farthest objects that are in acceptably sharp focus in an image”. I’ve been interested in this concept for some time and how it could translate into music through the use of polytonal and polyrhythmic manipulation. In the group Trichotomy we often experiment with these concepts in real time via improvisation and extended sections which provide scope for this to occur.
Composers such as Prokofiev and Stravinsky have been key influences on my writing and how they have used polytonality and rhythm
to great effect. I wanted to use this opportunity to extend my harmonic
and rhythmic palette.
